Description
Zoamet
Eye Drops is a topical ophthalmic solution cantaining an imidazoline
derivative, oxymetazoline, with sympathomimetic activity.
It is safer alternative to corticosteroids in the treatment
of allergic and non-infectious conjunctivitis.

Actions
Zoamet
Eye Drops containing oxymetazoline hydrochloride, is applied
topically to the conjunctiva to temporarily relieve congestion
and redness due to minor irritation. Removal of the offending
agent and topical relief of the burning, smarting pain of
the inflamed conjunctiva are the first step in the treatment
of minor eye irritation of allergic and non-infectious origin.
Zoamet Eye Drops used topically in the eye evokes alfa-adrenergic
effect resulting in local vasoconstrictions, rapidly improving
thereby, conjunctival hyperaemia and odema. Zoamet Eye Drops
is a rational alternative to ophthalmic steroids, since steroids
may raise intraocular pressure (IOP), interfere with absorption
of of blood in the chambers of the eye and may produce mydriasis;
oxymetazoline.

drop is not known to raise IOP or mydrasis. The improvement
in hyperaemia and odema were observed in most patients by
mid week and is sustained throughout the week. Zoamet
Eye Drops significantly and safely relieve the signs and symptoms
of allergic or environmental conjunctivitis.
Following
topical application of oxymetazoline ophthalmic solution,
local vasoconstriction usually occurs within minutes and may
persist for upto 6 hours. Information on distribution and
elimination of the drug in humans is not available.
Indications
For
relief of symptoms of allergic and non-infectious conjunctivitis,
redness due to minor eye irritations viz. caused by cold,
dust, wind, swimming, pollen, wearing contact lens.
Precautions & Contraindictions
Patients
using oxymetazoline hydrochloride ophthalmic solution should
be advised to discontinue the drug and consult a physician
if ocular pain or visual changes occur, they continue to experience
ocular redness or irritations or the conditions worsens or
persists for more than 72 hours.
Adverse Reaction
Usually
rare when used for a short period . Infrequently stinging,
or discomfort or dryness in the eye may be encountered.
Drug Interactions
Specific
drug interaction studies have not been carried out with oxymetazoline
hydrochloride ophthalmic solution.
Dose
& Administration
Adults
&Children > 6 years -- 1 or 2 drops to be instilled
every 6 hours.
