Drugs to be Avoided or Used with Caution in Pregnancy
Drugs	Trimester of risk	Adverse Effects
1. Cardiovascular system
(a) Diuretics	3	Reduce plasma volume and placental perfusion and should not be used to treat hypertension in pregnancy.
Thiazides	3	May cause neonatal thrombocytopenia
(b) Anti-arrhythmic drugs
Amiodarone	2,3	Releases iodine with possible risk of neonatal goitre. Use only if no effective alternative.
(c) Beta-adrenoceptor blocking drugs	3	Neonatal hypoglycaemia and bradycardia. The risk is greater in women with severe hypertension.
(d) Antihypertensive drugs Guanethidine	3	Postural hypotension and reduced uteroplacental perfusion. Should not be used to treat hypertension in pregnancy.
