Actions
Vegetable bitters like Kalmegh and Kurchi stimulate appetite
and increase the flow of digestive juice and help in the management
of anorexia, flatulence, irregular bowels, etc. Kalmegh and
Bile salts act as important cholagogues and choleretics. Cascara
and Sodium phosphate help in satisfactory evacuation of the
large gut. Bile salts and Sodium benzoate produce bacteriostatic
action in the gut, prevent putrefaction and accelerate peristalsis
Indications
Livotone
is
useful in the management of viral, alcoholic or drug induced
hepatitis; liver and gastrointestinal dysfunctions associated
with poor
appetite, indigestion, flatulence, griping, habitual constipation,
fat intolerance; haemorrhoidal bleeding and allergic skin
disorders; it is also useful as an adjuvant during growth
period in children.
Contraindications
Complete
biliary obstruction.
Adverse Reactions
Overdose
of Livotone
may cause loose stools and gastrointestinal cramping which
indicates for reduction in dosage.
Precautions
Due
caution should be employed for patients with gastritis, peptic
ulcer and with symptoms of appendicitis.
Dose
Adults : 5-10 ml (1 to 2 teaspoonfuls approx.)
Children : 1-2 ml (1/4 to 1/2 teaspoonful approx.) twice
daily before or after meals.
