| Description
Iodolan
is a complex of iodine and the nonsurfactant polymer polyvinyl
pyrrolidone, which releases free iodine slowly. Iodolan is
a wide spectrum non-antibiotic, non-irritating, non-staining,
microbicidal formulation

Actions
Iodolan
provides iodine in best tolerated form of Povidone-Iodine
(PVP-I). Iodine becomes water soluble by forming fast complexes
with polyvinyl pyrrolidone and also becomes chemically stable.
It is demonstrated that the iodine available in PVP-I performs
the same functions as Iodine in tincture. Iodolan is more
advantageous than iodine itself as irritativity and toxicity
of iodine is minimised without loss of activity in its bactericidal,
viricidal and fungicidal capabilities. It has the same broad
antimicrobial spectrum as iodine solution and tincture. It
kills most bacteria and other pathogens virtually on contact.
It enhances healing of minor wounds and has a very broad spectrum
of microbicidal activity. Iodolan (PVP-I) has also
greater activity against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus
aureus. Iodolan
(Povidone-Iodine) solution is easily soluble in water.
|
It is known that bactericidal activity persists since iodine
is released gradually in this solution. As PVP-I is less irritating,
Iodolan can be directly applied on the mucosa
and wound surfaces. Even in the presence of blood, serum and
necrotic tissue, PVP-I does not lose its bactericidal activity.
Iodolan (PVP-I) is non-toxic and is free
of the problems of induced bacterial resistance
Indications
Iodolan
Solution is useful in topical management of herpes, moniliasis,
degerming skin and treatment of wounds; preoperative preparation
of skin, postoperative dressing.Iodolan
Ointment is useful in topical treatment of boils, furunculosis,
sycosis barbae, impetigo, paronychia, otitis externa, tinea
infestations, cutaneous candidiasis, secondary infections
in burns, wounds, ulcers.
Contraindications
Sensitivity
to iodine.
Adverse Reactions
Iodolan
(PVP-I)
presents iodine in a form of low toxicity. Hypersensitivity
reaction and irritation may occur on application of Iodolan on skin & mucous membrane, albeit,
severe reactions are rare.
Precautions
In rare cases redness, irritation, swelling or pain persist
or increase; if infection occurs use of Iodolan is to be discontinued.
Keep Iodolan out of reach of children
Dosage & Administration
Iodolan
Solution
or Ointment is to be applied directly over the affected areas
as is necessary; may be bandaged.
