Actions
The action of Terbutaline is due to activation of adenyl cyclase that catalyses ATP to CAMP resulting in relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle. Terbutaline also enhances mucociliary transport - to help expectoration and thereby control cough. Terbutaline also is known to cause diminished histamine release and other chemical mediators from the mast cells and possibly offers anti-inflammatory effect. Following oral administration Terbutaline causes flow rate improvement within 30 minutes with significant clinical improvement of pulmonary function within 1 - 2 hours with duration of action persisting up to 8 hours. It has long plasma half life of 11 hours compared to that of 4 hours with Salbutamol.

. Bromhexine is a mucous modifying drug whose action has been fully documented . It is capable of modulating the activity of the goblet cells, inducing hydrolytic depolymerization of the mucoprotein fibers and stimulating the activity of the ciliated epithelium. This improves the flow properties of bronchial mucous and eases expectoration which is of value in the management of bronchitis.
